Me...a Runner!?!

Follow along as I detail my journey from an occasion jogger to a full fledged half marathoner!

March 31, 2012
Yeah, so my long run this week didn't happen.  It was equal parts not wanting to run, the heat, a job interview, and starting said new job.  So my longest run has been 6 miles and tomorrow I will be doubling that run plus some.  Oy.  I won't lie.  I'm nervous about this.  But I'm so excited about having trained for 3 months for this and completing something that I've wanted to do even if I probably wouldn't have signed up if it weren't for Kaitlyn.  Either way, I'm excited.  Plus it's the first thing on my 30 Before 30 list that I'll be able to cross off.  So it's off the bed for me...I've got a half marathon to run in the morning!

Although I've not been blogging it as I should, I have been running.  Nothing too intense or overly strenuous, but I've been trying to increase mileage while keeping the same pace of each additional mile.  Thus far my longest run has been 4 miles.  Until today that is.  I ran 6 miles while keeping a 10 min/mile pace.  I actually had a couple of miles that were uphill so those were a little more than 10 minutes, but those were never more than 13 min/mile.  Overall I'm happy with what I've done so far and hope to get at least one more long run in next week before the race which is a week from tomorrow.  I can't believe the race is almost here already.  I'm a little nervous, but very excited about accomplishing this.  More soon!

Life has gotten crazy hectic and I've not only neglected my blogging, but my running too.  Hopefully I'll be getting back to it in the next 1-2 weeks.  In the meantime, I'm on a hunt for the perfect running shoes.  I've been running in Saucony Progrid Ride 2.  I LOVE them!  They're light, cushy, and perfect for me as I'm pidgeon toed and overprontate.

The problem is Saucony is now on version 4 of these shoes.  And the ones I've found are ugly.  And everyone knows when doing something like running, you have to look good.  If you're someone like me who doesn't enjoy running, nice shoes help.  So even though I've not kept up with my running like I should've, I've definitely had running on the mind.

Here's to finding some cute, comfortable running shoes and getting back into it!

Since I posted about how much time I spend on Pinterest I thought it only fair to share some of my favorite workout photos.  Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

I think this speaks well enough for itself.

Jillian Michaels scares me.  But she speaks truth. Listen to your body, but not to the point of not pushing yourself.

This is my absolutely favorite verse. Like it's-tatted-on-my-back  favorite.   It applies to EVERY thing in life.

It's about me, pushing and believing in myself and sometimes not listening when I start to doubt myself.

And let's just be honest.  No matter why we start, there's a little bit of this thought process involved in working out :)

It's happened.

They say it takes 21 days to establish a new habit.  Mine has become running.  As in I feel icky if I don't.  Uh, say what!?!  I've never had this, this feeling of enjoying working out.  Like I waited too late to get a full 3.5 miles in on Tuesday so Wednesday, my cross training only day, I did 2 miles BEFORE I did my cross training.  What the what!?!  (Thank you Liz Lemon...seriously watch this video-hilarious!)

Anyway, I've become weirdly addicted to working out.  It's as if my body needs it to function properly.  I don't know what to do with this new development.  I mean, of course, I'm going to keep working out, but it's as if my body has been taken over.  Strange.  Stranger still is how much I enjoy and want to learn new exercises.
I was telling Petey just the other day how I've become all gung ho about looking up new exercises and motivational quotes on Pinterest.  It's all I want to do.   And it's bad.  Seriously.  Bad.
But then again, I'm getting into shape and getting stronger as a runner everyday.  So I can't really be THAT bad that I spend so much time on Pinterest, right!?!  Yeah, that's what I thought too :)

I did my longest run to date this morning.  It was 3 miles.  I know to some that's a warm up, but to me it was setting a record as that's the farthest I've continually run.  And it felt good.  At least by the end anyway.  When I started running I realized how I've not been stretching as well as I could or should.  I felt like my hip flexors were gonna rip right there on the first straight away at Lake Lynn.  But I kept going and as my body warmed they started to loosen.  But you better believe I stretched dang good after I finished!

Since registering for this race, I've gotten really serious not only about running, but about exercise in general.  Even though I work in "off" days of not running I still try to do some yoga or stretches or something.  And I have days in which I cross train so I'm still getting a good workout, but something other than running and most importantly I'm working all body parts not just my legs.

That said, I've become an exercise blog/Pinterest fanatic.  Okay, I was a Pinterest fanatic already, but I can't get enough of the exercise idea posts and the blogs I find on there!  It's pure wonderfulness:)  I like that a lot of the people post encouraging photos and quotes, blogs about healthy weight loss, and exercise programs.  I could do without the multitude of half naked women, who are no doubt in incredible shape, but as I'm not there and quite honestly don't want to be there, I don't want to see it.  Trying to maintain a healthy self image in this day and age is hard enough without being inundated with photos of women in better shape than me.  But in spite of those photos, I like knowing I'm not the first non runner training for a half, that I'm not alone in looking for new and different ways to get in and stay in shape.

One blog I found gave an awesome idea of a post workout food.  Anyone who workouts consistently knows how important a post workout snack is.  This one combines a couple of favorites-chocolate and peanut butter.  Where is the bad!?!  There is none!  Honestly, it's like eating a no bake cookie, but without the sugar and butter.  Here is the recipe.  I've already had it a couple of times this week and it's so good!  I like to call it Chocolatey Peanut Butter Goodness!

1/4 C. oats

1/2 banana, mashed
1/4 C. almond milk
1/2 T. cocoa
1 egg white (opt. for extra protein)
1 T. peanut butter

Mix first 5 ingredients and microwave for about 1.5 minutes. Top with peanut or almond butter.

I've made a couple of substitutes...skim milk instead of almond milk, no banana, and whey protein powder instead of an egg white.  And that has everything to do with what we have or didn't have in the house.  I'm actually looking forward to getting to the store to add the banana.  I think it will make it better.  Enjoy!

We've already lost a soldier.

Kaitlyn somehow broke her foot running and is in a boot.  She's the genius who came up with this idea to run a half and now she's out.  Oy vey.

In other news, I've somewhat kept up with my running.  I don't like running in the gym, but it's winter here which makes running outside impossible.  I mean, it can be done.  I saw a woman running the other morning, but there are not enough cold weather running clothes to convince me to run in 29 degree weather.  Also, I don't have cold weather running clothes.  Up until this winter, I didn't run in the cold weather.  I'll need to fix that I guess.

So it's no secret a significant part of wanting to run this half is my desire to be a part of the cool kid club and have a 13.1 magnet to put on my Jeep.  But I saw these on Pinterest the other day and now I want to be a legit runner to justify having one of them too.

I mean as long as I get the running done, does it really matter if my inspiration is jewelry!?!

Hmmm,  I'll think on that more...

Much like everyone I have strange habits.  No, I'm not about to go into listing them, but I will say that I don't think "13" is a pretty number.  So I didn't want to start my half marathon training 13 weeks out.  So I made this last week a trial beginning week and will be jumping full fledged into training this week.

That said, my body hurts.  I keep track of my lifting schedule on my phone.  So when I went to the gym the other day, I lift exactly what was put into my phone.  Except it didn't occur to me that those records were from about 3 months ago when I lifted every other day.  I've not been lifting that often.  And my sore muscles can attest to that.

I woke up Thursday and wanted to cry.  If ever I needed someone to lift me out of bed it was then.  Unfortunately, I had to do the roll to the side and hope my feet hit the ground before my body.  Except I had also done a significant amount of leg exercises so that was almost another disaster.

But I was proud of myself.  Even with the soreness I went out and ran 2 miles.  And by Friday DOMS had set in like a champ.  Remember DOMS?  Everyone's experienced it even if they didn't know it had a name...it's Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness...you're more sore a day or two after exercising than you are right after completing the exercise.  I've got it in spades.  I was hoping getting right back out there and running would help work out the muscle soreness from lifting and let me bypass DOMS, but no luck.

Oh well.  I've found some online yoga videos that I'm gonna do here in a little bit.  Hoping it helps stretch out my sore muscles because my run tomorrow has to happen. :/
